For the 3rd consecutive year of the USARL International 9′s Tournament, the Auckland Metropolitan Police Rugby League, FENCIBLES have returned to New Zealand with the trophy.

After a brilliant day of competition and weather, the Final of the tournament was played under a cloud of rain and chilly weather. The experienced Fencibles defeated a gallant Philadelphia Fight 26-0.

The Fight made their way to the final in extra-time, with a surprising and exciting win over the visiting Australian team, New England Echidnas, 16-12. The unfortunate Echidnas suffered in the closing matches due to a depleted squad through injury. The tournament took its toll on many, including ex-NRL & St George star Nathan Blacklock, who hobbled courageously in the semi-final to keep the hopes alive for the Echidnas. The Fight also lost 3 key players from injury going into the final.

The Fencibles defeated Rhode Island Rebellion 30-0 to make there 3rd consecutive final. Also from Rhode Island came the introduction to the tournament of the American Youth Rugby League Association (AYRLA) Under-23′s squad. Young and enthusiastic, these players are the next generation of players to exhibit Rugby League in the north eastern states.

Two of their players, Noell Bulson and Ryan Iovino, were awarded with access to online programs to help develop youth Rugby League talent in the USA. Bruce Wedderburn, a USARL Referee from Washington DC, co-ordinated a donation from Australian, Paul Williams of www.completeleagueplayer.com as reward for performance and dedication.

This weekend will see the first ever U23 championship finals played in the USA.

The event run by the American Youth Rugby League Association (AYRLA) is the result of years of hard work that has also seen the introduction of Rugby League into schools and programs for troubled youths in the Rhode Island and Boston area.

One of the teams in the final “RITS Raiders Black” is from Rhode Island’s only youth offender school facility for juvenile offenders. Lawrence Almagno who heads up the AYRLA first approached the Rhode Island Training School (RITS) as a thought to use the sport of Rugby League as a means to foster the positive development in youthful offenders ranging in age from 15 thru 20.

He and AYRLA GM Mike Kelly, contacted RITS staff Jason Zuena, who was responsible for overseeing all disciplinary matters for these sentenced youth. Larry convinced Jason Zuena that rugby league would be a great tool in developing discipline and teamwork and would also help the youth to challenge themselves in trying new opportunities. Many of the inner city youth didn’t even know that rugby was a sport and initially little interest was displayed.

A year later, the program has evolved into a legitimate program with real teams, uniforms and referees. The entire program has been a volunteer effort with both AYRLA and RITS staff assuming many roles from coach, mentor, cheerleaders and fund-raisers.

Equipment and funding for teams was made possible through generous donations from businesses such as Kewi Physical Therapy’s David Wickiden (NYC) who donated Cleats and Hot Chili Sports Wear (Leeds UK) who supplied kits for the RITS teams.

8 weeks ago the results were on full display, as the 2 RITS teams had their first league game. For the 35 young men involved in this game, it was also a defining moment for them, not only in terms of competing, but in accepting new challenges, dedicating and motivating themselves to achieve new goals.

RITS Superintendent Joseph Cardin expressed his thoughts on what the introduction of Rugby League has done for his school, “Rugby League has truly transformed many of our young men and taught them self discipline and respect for each other. While it is difficult to predict the future, recent events have been a game changer for our youth and we really anticipate future success. When the sport of rugby league is combined with the passion of coaches and players such as Lawrence Almagno, Jason Zuena and the RI Rebellion, it has truly become a winning formula.”

Now in its third year, AYRLA has various programs in a number of states and anticipates by the end of 2013 it will have registered over 1,000 students to have played rugby league.

If you are a business or individual that is looking to make a donation, please contact AYRLA GM Mike Kelly at mike@ayrla.org

About AYRLA:
The American Youth Rugby League Association (AYRLA) is a not for profit corporation that partners with The USA Rugby League, developing youth in all aspects of their life, providing role models from a top-down approach, REBELLING against At Risk Behavior.

AYRLA & USA Rugby League—AYRLA is also proud to be working closely with the USA Rugby League to fulfill the youth development goal of improving fitness and well-being in students and developing character that will cross over into the participants’ day to day lives. USA Rugby League endorses AYRLA as the national program for developing non-contact and contact Rugby League in schools and educational organizations. Lawrence Almagno, founder of the program, is also the Director of the USA Rugby League’s Club & Youth Development in addition to being the Founder & CEO of the Rhode Island Rebellion. USA Rugby League is supporting certain AYRLA affiliates throughout the country to help them develop their AYRLA programs. By working together, AYRLA and USA Rugby League both benefit from sharing their ideas and experiences, increasing the numbers of youth playing the game and lowering the average age of such players.

Saturday May 18th will see the 3rd annual USA Rugby League Nines Tournament with two time defending champions the New Zealand Police Fencibles returning to defend their crown.

The NZ Police won the first two USARL 9′s tournaments and are keen to make sure they take home a 3rd. The Kiwi’s are currently touring British Columbia Canada and playing in the BCRL 9′s tournament this weekend, so the police are ramping up to come into Philadelphia primed and ready to take on not just the USA sides, but two from Australia and one from Jamaica.

NZ Tour Manager Tony Feasey adds; “The Auckland Metro Rugby League team; the Fencibles are back in Philadelphia to defend their USARL 9’s title. Coached by former Mangere East old boy Bryan Laumatia, they hope to play a fast, open and entertaining style of rugby league. We feel honored to be invited back to Philadelphia by the USARL to compete in their tournament. Despite winning the last 2 years in a row, we do not consider ourselves favorites and will not be taking any team lightly.

Although we are an amateur team made up mostly of police officers we do not view ourselves as an exclusive side. Despite their background in rugby union – we have 3 ‘civilians’ who have expressed an interest in the Police as a career and therefore they have been invited to travel with us. Before arriving in Philadelphia we have competed in the inaugural BCRL invitational 9’s being held near the picturesque town of Whistler. We are fortunate to be in a unique position as Police officers and rugby league players. Our goal is to help promote rugby league and at the same time show people our pride and professionalism not only as rugby league players but as policemen of a wider brotherhood.

Whilst in Whistler the team attended a local High School and held a training session using the opportunity to interact with the locals and introduce them to the great game of rugby league. We also hope to do something similar in Philadelphia as well as undertake professional development by interacting with the local police.”

The USARL’s Liberty and Freedom conference system is on hold for 2013, but the rivalry within the northern and southern east coast regions does not stop there, with Liberty region and last year’s USARL Championship finalists, Boston 13s, facing their ever-improving conference neighbors, Rhode Island Rebellion, in the opening two rounds of 2013.

While in the Freedom region, Philadelphia Fight travel south to their arch-rival Washington DC Slayers in the opening round. The Fight, 2nd, and Slayers, 3rd, finished on equal points last year and it was only for-and-against percentages that separated them. The Slayers will be looking to make the Fight’s drive back home a miserable one.

In Florida, the Jacksonville Axemen will host 2012 cellar-dwellers Baltimore Blues for which should be a comfortable start to the season for the 2012 Champions. But the Blues are loyal to the cause and courageous to accept this season’s opening challenge.

Rhode Island Rebellion welcome the early pressure, high level of play and the chance to do battle with the highly regarded 13s on three occasions during the regular season. Along with that big ask, they meet the 2011 Champions, Philadelphia Fight twice and the Axemen in Jacksonville. With the added strength of 3 Aussie import players, a couple of upsets will give the Rebellion tremendous confidence and more than likely a place in the finals for the first time.

The Boston 13s are looking to overcome last seasons Championship loss at home and take that additional step to bring the trophy home with the return of ex-Australian NRL player and 13s Captain Coach, Dustin Cooper. Also returning to the club to join Cooper will be the experienced Robin Peers from the UK.

Two 2011 USARL Championship winning players return to the Fight for 2013. Prop and Championship Captain, Matt Webster, and half-back Joel Weeks. Also making up the import trio for 2013 will be Mackay Magpie’s centre Ben Russell. The Queensland resident has also played with Brisbane Easts Colts. Fight stalwarts Rich Henson, Dave Wilmore, Mike Kelly, Andrew Tully and James Coleman have also returned for the start of pre-season activities.

Coaching duties may be different at the Axemen with the unlikely return of Championship winning hooker and Captain-Coach Mat Keeley for 2013. In contrast, the Axemen welcome back two of their most damaging and respected players, incumbent USA Tomahawk Captain Apple Pope and Akarika Dawn. Dawn, the former USA Tomahawk forward and University of Colorado linebacker has been a force for the Axemen in previous years.

In the nation’s capital, the Washington DC Slayers are excited about improving on their 2012 results. They have an excellent roster and although they face the Axemen and Fight on two occasions each, they will take advantage of the three scheduled matches against Baltimore Blues.

While a tense season unfolds, Lawrence Almagno, CEO of the American Youth Rugby League Association (AYRLA) will be conducting a first in the New England area this summer. A competition involving players from Providence Universities. The competition will be enhanced by the New Haven Warriors and Oneida FC. Both the young Warriors and Oneida will take a spell from the USARL national championship this year while they regroup and rebuild for 2014.

The formidable side is a strong contender in the tournament with players proud to platform their Aboriginal heritage and showcase their talent by coming up against rivals from around the globe.

Dan Randall, was keen to play in the tournament for Philadelphia Fight, but thought it would be a better idea to organize his own team, with the USARL right behind the move

“Chairman Peter Illfield and Ryan McGough were all for me trying to bring a team over so we’re now looking to showcase our culture and our football ability,” Randall said.

“There aren’t too many indigenous Rugby League teams that tour overseas, so this will be a good opportunity. Plus it’s to experience the US and the way they play footy,” he continued.

Dan has put together a strong and talented mix of players from New South Wales and Queensland.

The impressive line up boasts well known names like Yileen Gordon who started his rugby career at the NRL’s South Sydney Rabbitohs Club and Australia Rugby Union 7s player Arthur Little.

Although the team hasn’t heard too much about the USARL competition, players don’t plan on under estimating the other teams’ ability.

“We don’t want to take anyone lightly,” Randall said.

The Australian side looks forward to the fast paced, explosive nature of the tournament and are looking to turn the heat up with a performance that will justify their position as favourites, ultimately returning home on top.

“I’d also like to let the other sides know we are there to win and not a holiday, so I’ve put together a very talented side,” Randall said.

About the USARL 9’s

Rugby league nines (or simply nines) is a version of rugby league football played with nine players on each side. The game is substantially the same as full rugby league (13 a side), with some differences in rules and shorter games. Nines is usually played in festivals, as its shorter game play allows for a tournament to be completed in a day or over a single weekend. It has become more popular than the similar rugby league sevens (rugby league with seven players to a side), with many tournaments using nines to distinguish it from rugby union sevens.

The same as rugby league laws with the following exceptions.

Each team is allowed a squad of up to fifteen players, with no more than nine players on the field at any time. Unlimited substitutions are allowed from a named bench of four players.

The match lasts for 20 minutes, divided into two halves of 9 minutes. 2 minute interval allowing for the teams to change ends.

Each half starts with a place kick.

Scrums consist of no more than 5 forwards, with a maximum 3 in the front row and 2 in the second row. When the ball is in the scrum no more than 4 players from each team shall act as backs. The ball must emerge from behind the feet of the second row.

Conversions after a successful try take the form of drop kicks. Players from the team that has conceded the score do not have to retire behind the try line but must not interfere with any conversion attempt.

When points have been scored the team against which points have been scored will receive a drop kick from the team that scored (must travel at least 10 meters).

Jaguars recognize the Jacksonville Axemen National Championship live at Thursday’s game and thus continue their support of USA Rugby League.

Within 24 hours of the Firehouse Subs Jacksonville Axemen winning the USA Rugby League National Championship, the Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL) reached out to invite the Rugby team to be recognized publicly at this Thursday’s NFL preseason game in Jacksonville. The Axemen have been asked to take the field during the 1st quarter when the Jaguars take on the Atlanta Falcons, to be congratulated in front of the Jaguars fans on winning their 2nd National Championship in 3 years.

The Jaguars have had a long history of supporting the Axemen, and Rugby League in general, over the last seven years. “The Jags have been an incredible supporter of the Axemen since day one”, said Spinner Howland. “They came to our rescue in our early seasons when we needed an alternate place to hold a training camp scrimmage by offering their practice venue. That support has continued in a variety of way ever since.”

The Jaguars have also hosted a great number of International Rugby League teams who have visited Jacksonville for games and training camps over the years. The Leeds Rhinos (UK) had extensive sports business meetings to swap ideas with the Jaguars during their stay in 2008 for the Australia Day Challenge. The South Sydney Rabbitohs also visited the Jaguars and their facility during that event.

“The Jags have been huge for all our overseas teams and players”, said Howland. “The UK alone has had the Leeds Rhinos, Salford City Reds, UK Police Team, Halifax Blue Sox and Huddersfield Giants, all visit their facility at one time or another. These are top level sporting organizations in their own right in the UK and the Jags have welcomed them every time they visit the USA. The Jaguars have truly opened their arms to the teams and athletes of the “Football” code that thrives overseas. They are incredible ambassadors for the City of Jacksonville.”

The Axemen would also like to encourage all Rugby League fans in the UK to start getting behind the Jaguars and adopt them as their favorite NFL team.

“UK Rugby League fans can return the support the Jaguars have show our sport and many UK teams by getting behind the Jags,” said Axemen co-owner Drew Slover. “With the Jaguars now confirmed to play one game a year in London

(UK) for the next four years, it would mean a lot to them and the City of Jacksonville to have a good local fan base in the UK to help support them during those trips.”

Spinner Howland also commented on the great opportunity the games in London present to the UK fans. “Rugby League has always had a culture of taking care of our own and helping those who support us and our game and this is a great opportunity for Rugby League fans to show the Jags that we are thankful for their help by growing our game on an international level. They are helping grow the game in the USA by directly helping and recognizing the Axemen, and also by hosting and sharing with the overseas teams that visit Jacksonville. That makes them one our own.”

The Axemen are also encouraging all their fans to attend the Jaguars game this Thursday night and be apart of the celebration when YOUR Jacksonville Axemen go onto the field at Everbank Field and be congratulated by YOUR Jacksonville Jaguars. The game starts at 6.30 pm and the Axemen will take the field sometime during the 1st quarter.

The Jacksonville Axemen are the 2012 USA Rugby League Champions defeating the Boston 13s 28-22.

The final played at MIT Steinbrenner Stadium (Boston) saw a packed house with standing room only witness one of the great finals in American Rugby League history. In near perfect weather conditions, fans rallied around their local team and were treated to an exhibition of Rugby League that is sure to delight both the USA and international officials looking ahead.

The game started at a frenetic pace and both teams were intent on playing mistake free sets while the pregame jitters past with each play the ball. Boston were the first to draw blood as some quick hands by Captain Dustin Cooper spun the ball wide onto a flying Boston scorer in the corner. In similar fashion they tested the Axemen again and found easy gaps with more points on offer. Down 10-0, a shell shocked Axemen outfit were desperate to regroup with Boston maintaining possession and again on the attack. With Boston gaining easy yards, Cooper placed a near perfect kick into a flying wingers hands only to have the ball spilled over the line and possession turned over. It turned out to be a crucial moment in the game and one the Axemen took advantage of.

The experienced Axemen began working the ball up the middle of the field controlling the ruck as each set past. With Boston on the back foot after multiple attacking raids, a tiring defense saw the Axemen over the line in simple fashion from 10 yards out. Within minutes they were over again and the dazed and confused 13s team had their heads down going into halftime 10-10.

The second half continued with Jacksonville well in control and local fans could sense the Axemen still had extra gears while Boston struggled to find their early game form. The Axemen forwards were punishing with their runs and the majority of possession saw continued points added to the board in favor of the visiting team.

Up 24-10 and with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, the Axemen were dangerously close to putting the game away when a dropped ball was scooped up by the 13s and several plays later they were under the posts. The following set, some costly penalties by Jacksonville had Boston in prime position and seconds before the siren they were over the line backed by a deafening roar from the crowd.

With 20 minutes left on the clock and the score favoring the Axemen 24-22, the crowd was in a fever pitch and fans could sense something special was on offer. Both teams didn’t disappoint and some electrifying attacking plays from both camps had all 26 players on the field digging deep. In the end, experience was the difference and a smart play from Axemen#9 Matt Keely saw a perfectly placed kick into the end zone where a flying Axemen player pounced just shy of the dead ball line.

Despite several more opportunities, the 13s threw what little was left in the tank but they couldn’t crack a determined Axemen defensive line that had no intensions of going into extra time. Final Score was Jacksonville Axemen 28 defeating the Boston 13s 22.

#9 Matt Keely was a deserving winner of the MVP Medal. His quick thinking in attack was noticeable with each touch of the ball but his tireless defense in the remaining 10 minutes proved to be the difference between both teams.
